Eröffnung MELANIE GILLIGAN. The Common Sense Substitution

Die Videos von Melanie Gilligan (*1979 in Toronto, lebt in New York) thematisieren mit vielschichtigen, aus Fernsehserien adaptierten Narrativen die aktuellen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse. Mit viel Drama, aber auch Humor, Science Fiction und Horror setzt Gilligan die Stilbreite des aktuellen Kino- und Fernsehfilms künstlerisch um. Ökonomische Bedingungen werden nicht isoliert behandelt, sondern unter anderem zum Prozess der Subjektivierung, zum individuellen Körper, den Affekten und den Arbeitsanforderungen des neuen Kapitalismus ins Verhältnis gesetzt.
Die Ausstellung präsentiert eine Auswahl aus Gilligans Videoserie „The Common Sense“ (2013–15) sowie die Premiere des neuen Videos „Substitution“ (2014), das gemeinsam mit der Künstlergruppe Wooloo entstanden ist. In beiden Arbeiten prägen die wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse nicht nur die Hauptpersonen, sondern auch deren Lebensumstände und sozialen Beziehungen.

The videos of Melanie Gilligan (*1979 Toronto, lives in New York) address current political and economic conditions through intricate narratives, adopting the form of television series. These employ drama, comedy, science fiction and horror using visual styles of contemporary film and television. The artist does not deal with economic exchange in isolation but puts this in relation to, among other things, processes of subjectivation, the status of physical bodies and affect in contemporary capitalism and the demands of work.
This exhibition presents a section of Gilligan’s recent serial video work “The Common Sense“ (2013–15) alongside the premier of a new video, “Substitution“ (2014), made in collaboration with artist group Wooloo. In both these works economic conditions impact and shape the characters, which is one recurrent theme in Gilligan’s work.
