Turning Points, Matrices and the Making of Postmodern Jewish History

For many years one of the favorite topics of Jewish historiography was "When Does the Modern Period of Jewish History Begin?" Scholars advocated various dates, such as 1648, 1666 or 1791, as the beginning of Jewish modernity. Each of these suggested dates was considered a turning point because of a central process (reversal of the direction of migration) or a focal event (conversion of Shabbetai Zvi to Islam, legal emancipation of the Jews of France as part of the developments of the French Revolution).
In this talk I will posit that all of these "turning points" were constituent components of the matrix of Jewish modernity. Rather than any single event or process being the trigger of Jewish modernity; it was the interaction of all of them that powered the modern Jewish experience. In addition, I will claim that this matrix ceased to be relevant around 1950 and that a new matrix, a postmodern one, now obtains.

Am Sonntag, den 8. Juli und am Dienstag, den 10. Juli, stehen öffentliche Vorträge auf dem Programm, die einen aktuellen Einblick in die Forschungslage und die wissenschaftliche Diskussion über jüdische Kultur und Geschichte bieten.
